I love that Spock's freaking out, but it's nothing compared to what 'human' males do when they are in the same boat. He's trying to stay close, but not to close to her.

Can I just say how awesome you are? I love the very idea that he had to confront his own emotions when dealing with hers. That he would be humbled by her love.
