Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell is a hot pilot who rises to the front of his squadron and gets a chance in a lifetime to train along side his best friend Lieutenant JG (Junior Grade) Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw with an elite group of pilots at the U.S. Naval Fighter Weapons School when the pilot above him (Cougar) in rankings drops out. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.
