Lila looked up at her mother with questioning
brown eyes “momma is he here yet”? she asked just above a whisper Violet,
almost hadn’t heard her daughter amongst all the noise of the crowded airport.
They had been waiting at the Austin International Airport for her daddy and the
newly five year old looked tired and anxious, she had really missed her daddy
and Violet could totally understand. “No, not yet baby girl but soon ok.”  She answered pushing back a stray curl from Lila’s
pony tail. “Ok” she replied leaning into her mother’s side as they sat waiting
in the stiff chairs of the baggage claim area. This last tour had been a hard
one on the Riggs family, with Lila starting school and Violet going back to
work as a nurse she had to deal with all the tantrums an tears, and those were
on good days when she hadn’t been missing her daddy thank god for Julie her
part -time nanny and Grace her mother-in-law otherwise she doesn’t know what
she would have done. Stealing a glance at her watch Violet checked the time it
was 5 past 10 and Daniel’s plane was supposed to have landed at 10 pm, so just
a little longer she thought. Ten months with him in Iraq, should have been
nothing new to her this was her third, though longest deployment as an army
wife, in the five almost six years since Daniel joined a month or so after
graduating high school.  Yeah, see they
got married a week after graduating high school, on Violet’s 18th birthday
she her parents, and Daniel and his
mother all went down to the courthouse and about three weeks after that Daniel
was on his way to basic training. It would seem to most that they rushed things
but they’d known each other since kindergarten and started dating in the eighth
grade, they grew up in the same small town about an hour outside Austin Texas
and had the same values so it made sense that they would eventually marry,
color lines be damned and though there weren’t many interracial relationships
in their small town they weren’t the only mixed race couple.

With
Daniel going into the army they wanted to tie the knot before hand, and well
little Lila was his way of leaving something behind for her to remember him by
while he was at basic he joked. It was either football, the military, coaching
an athletic team of some sort or becoming “the next big thing” in country music
for a lot the guys that graduated from their school in Wimberley. Damn, she missed her man she thought randomly tugging
on one of her lose wild curls she had to shake her head, what was a few more minutes.

“Hey there Riggs” snapped from her thoughts
she searched out that familiar southern baritone drawl. Scoping a sleeping Lila
into her arms she ran toward Daniel as fast as she could keeping in mind her
sleeping child.

“Baby, I missed so much” she said warping a
free arm around his neck and bringing her lips to meet his as tears flowed from
her hazel eyes. “Nah now none of that darlin, and I missed you guys so damn
much”, Daniel said pulling back from the tender kiss yet keeping both his arms
wrapped around her tiny waist holding both his girls close. “Daddy” rubbing her
eyes, Lila Rae focused her eyes making sure it really was her daddy and not a
dream before holding out her arms for him to take her from her mamma. “Hey
there pumpkin, come here I did ya miss me?” “Yeah, so much daddy” she said sleepily
resting her head on his shoulder. Grabbing Lila he bent over and picked up his
discarded carry on slinging it over his shoulder he took Violet’s hand in his
and lead his family outside the airport.

 “Hey,
where’d you park babe? “  Daniel asked as
they left the airport and made their way into cool Texas night the breeze
picking up. “Ground level babe, not too far” she said taking her keys out of
her coach tote bag and handing them to him. Making their way to her black ford
2011 pickup in the airport’s parking garage the family piled in and started on
their journey home to their comfortable four bedroom house in the neighborhood Violet
grew up in.

“So darlin, how things been here?” breaking
the comfortable silence he searched the hand laying on her thy and held onto it
as he drove set it to rest on his when he needed both hands. “Alright I guess,
I mean you know the same baby girl started school I’m back at work so there is
that, and oh wow is little thing getting an attitude on her” she chuckling stealing
a glance at the sleeping girl behind them.

“Is that so, can’t be my pumpkin your
talkin about” he said smiling thinking about his little princess and how much
she had grown up since last he was home. “Yeah, whatever well your pumpkin is a
little brat, still sweet but a little brat and the folks are doing ok can’t
wait to see you though”, Violet replied giving his hand a squeeze reminding
herself that yes, he was finally back home. “Hmm, well as much as I missed them
gotta say I got other things on my mind tonight. Casting her a look she knew
meant he was ready for some loving, and that they wouldn’t be getting much
sleep.  Is that so Mr. Riggs?

“Yes it sure is Mrs. Riggs…damn babe you
look good” he resting his free hand on her jean clad thy. Even without make-up
in nothing but skinny jeans his old go army t-shirt she shrunk her first
attempt at laundry a long sleeved sleeved white- t underneath  and some black cowboy boots he made her feel
beautiful. Laughing softly Violet shook her head, “well, then hurry up and get
us home papa” she lacing her fingers with his where they lay on her mid-thy.
