Constructive Criticism Allowed, Rude Reviews Are Not

Hello Ladies (and Gentlemen),

For the most part, we all want the Chamber to be a positive site and experience for everyone, readers and writers. Unfortunately every now and then there is someone who doesn’t want to play by the same rules as every one else. Disrespect of any kind, in the shoutbox, in reviews, in PMs, is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Period.

However, in many cases, the only way the moderators will know if reviews/reviewers are abusive is if writers and readers inform the moderating staff. All members, if at anytime you see a review or behavior that is derogatory, offensive, or mean report it immediately.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with constructive criticism. Many writers find it just as motivating and invigorating as reviews that are solely positive. However, when the criticism is no longer constructive and is just critical and mean-spirited, there is a problem.

We have many talented authors here who depend on reviewers to keep them going, but criticism from a reviewer that is not constructive will not be tolerated. Authors please, if you are getting abusive reviews say something. This is a form of bullying and abusive reviews and reviewers need to be reported to the moderators so that action can be taken.

Just like this type of behavior is not tolerated in our personal lives it shouldn’t be acceptable in our internet lives and will not be tolerated. The Chamber is a site that was started with the goal of providing empowering stories about women of color to the public and we should not allow a few bullies to ruin it for the rest of us.

So if you see an abusive review, report it. If you receive an abusive review, report it, if someone gets mean in the ShoutBox report it. We all have to do our part, both writers and readers, to keep the Chamber a positive experience for everyone.

I love the chamber and I for one don't mind constructive criticism.  When it gets nasty, it's hurtful and those of us who love the author's writings suffer from the loss.  I am sure that all of us who love this site will  be on the lookout so that what happened to SouthernScribe and any others who have left, will not happen again!

I agree constructive criticism is great as a writer you need to know your flaws but I also think it should be by a private message sent to the author no need to blast how many flaws you see on the authors story in a review. It is a little embarrassing some people cant handle it well. I myself am learning how to take it. Thats why I ask readers to send me a pm if they have any constructive criticism.... In saying all of that I love this website and will help protect it as well.. :)

thank you for posting this. it doesn't matter how we personally may or may not see certain comments; it's about how that author receives that feedback. there are ways to construct your words in an encouraging way that also suggests ideas and possible changes. in the words of Erykah Badu, i personally am sensitive about my isht. this isn't a hobby for me; i pour my soul into these characters and for someone to simply dismiss the work i put into it with callous, unthinking words that have no real depth or actual merit other than they simply don't like it? that hurts. so, yes, my work is gone, but i am going to be part of the solution.

Here is the deal. Writing is like putting a part of your soul out for the world to stomp on. I personally earned my writing wings thanks to many encouraging people from this sight. Even when many did not get the full concept of a story in the beginning, they stuck through it with encouragement and respect. I have had many harsh reviewers (thank goodness for delete) who, I believe were nasty because they did not like the way I portrayed their favorite character I can brush that off. It’s fanfiction. For those authors’ who are brave enough to present original characters to the masses it’s like watching your child going to school for the first time. It is terrifying.

For those “special” people who feel the need to destroy someone’s work, it shows what a sad and pathetic person you are. Heck I had someone take one of my stories place, it on their website and dismantle it one sentence at a time. I had to laugh and send them a message thanking them for their detailed critique. I was flattered. It took longer for them to dissect it then it took me to write it. They were not happy. My point is if you have never exposed yourself, left yourself open and raw for the world to see…keep your useless mouths shut.

I promise instead of deleting the rude and inconsiderate I will report them.

Its really sad that authors leave because of B.S like this. My thing of it is, if you don't like a story simply move on to the next one. Don't harrass someone because you don't like the concept of the story. Who cares? Move on!

I know what its like to be harrassed by horrible reviews. I was attacked once for a story I wrote so I had to take it down as well and it hurt as well. It hurt my self esteem and confidence. It took me a long time to get over it.You know what I'm back on my feet and moving strong!

Again, it's really sad that brilliant authors get harrassed by idiots.

I'm really glad this is being implemented bacause it takes so much guts to put yourself out there, and getting ripped to shreds by people with no tact and regard for others is just not right.

We do need to protect our authors for malicious attacks and I'm glad steps are being taken to ensure this happens.

I would like to say a big thank-you to all the authors on this site that contribute their time and effort to entertain us and I'm really sad to see IT and Scribe leave, as they are two of my fave authors.

Wait, cyber bullies drove off IT and The SouthernCribe? A bunch of spineles, spiteful punks is why two more of my favourite writers are now gone? >:(

Great. One of the few places on the net where women of colour can write fiction about women of colour without people acting like you worship demons, and the Mean Girl high school clique bull rears its head. >_<

It's really a disgrace that callous fools have ran off two of our FINEST authors. We as a family need to stand strong against this type of abuse before more of our gifted ones leave this community.

Constructive criticism will always be wanted and needed to help strengthen a writer's craft, but when the remarks turn mean...then it becomes a personal attack. Authors post certain warnings for certain stories for a reason and as a reader if you don't like a certain story, this site has hundreds of stories out there for your reading pleasure. And I know for a fact that even the most fickle of souls can find a tale or two.

I will be on the lookout for this type of cyber-bullying or foolishness as well and thank the LORD for the DELETE button.
