Oh my!
So Langston jr was truly in love with Lilly but with it being the times it was he was not able to be with her and his child Mavis.
All this time Mavis thought that her mother was forced but in actuallity they were in love with each other. More then likely the reason she cried when he left her bed is because she hated from him to go. But there is a different perception that a childs sees when they don't know what is going on. All this time the hatred that Mavis has felt toward her father could have been so different if she read the letters and her mother's writings.
I don't think even Ms. Trudy may have known the truth or maybe she did but Alvin her husband was more understanding of the situation.

Langston Jr was a Klansman hmmmm but he loved him some Lillie in his own way of course and by taking what was not offered. I guess in his mind he thought he had that right.
I am surprised he did not have a diary/journal of some kind I thought so sure that was how Langton III was going to find out about Mavis and how she was conceived and it was not out of being his mistress either.

William's little plot to cause problems for Mavis and Val has just been usurped by Hurricane Emily. Emily you shouldn't have pushed Mavis like that, her momma was raped it was no affair. Langston repeatedly raped her mother, so why would she want to get to know his child. You meant well Emily but that was still bogus. Great chapter!

I just had to chime in here...you nailed this chapter...I see now why Val doesn't visit her grandmother...why are some black people so colorstruck...she's a depicable old woman and I'm so glad that Matheson put her in her place...but also love the support he gave Val to realize that her problem went much deeper because she lost her son and Val was a constant reminder of how she lost him to Rachel...loved it!!!
