This is such an original take on a story that I have always wanted to know "What happens next?" The beautifully written prologue has made me a follower of this story.

Author's Response: Thank you! I am actually revising this story. So, I'll be replacing the prologue and chapter one soon. There will be changes in the writing as well as a few altered details that will be important to the story later.

I mean come on!! How many schemes must you try to pull off before you get it!! He's just not that into you!!!

I loved the update and thank you for this story. I love inter-racial historicals, they are so hard to find. Especially as it relates to a free woman of color. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Author's Response:

LOL! Too bad that book was not available in the 1800's. But, Letitia will learn that lesson the hard way.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Candace dear we must have chapter 17 soon! I know your computer died which definitely sucks. But I hope it didn't take your muse with it! I adore this story and check every week for more. Your writing style and grasp of Regency language is amazing. Please keep up the good work! :)

Author's Response: I am sorry for the delay. The next chapter is coming. It is halfway done and open on my computer right now.

Hi Candace! I have been following your story faithfully over at DWG and I'm so glad I came across your site to see some of your other writing. Just wanted to let you know that I think Love and Prejudice is an amazing story and I encourage you to try to see it through to publishing. I share a love for Jane Austen and a love of 3-dimensional female characters of color with you and I think you have mixed both of these loves in your story beautifully. Waiting for your next chapter with baited breath!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I had dinner the other night with Betsy, Debra Ann and Ellen from the DWG and AHA, and I was telling them how long I've been working on this story. It has been four years! But, I plan to keep writing until it is finished and then edit it well to try and get it published. Thanks for the encouraging words! They really mean alot!

This is by far one of the best stories that I have read in a long time. It is so rare to find an interracial historical read for this time period. This needs to be published! Great writing, can't wait for more.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the kind words. When I finally finish this I do plan on trying to get it published. It has been 5 years in the making! (I write so slowly and law school got in the way.)

Please, Please, Pleeeaseeeee!!!!!! Update SoooooN

I love All of JA. Would it make any differents if Lord Farthington was in fact her father.

I actually looked up pictures of  Colonel Fitzwilliam from the 1995 BBC version, if ever you should make the cast he's not bad to look at. Anthony Calf

Author's Response:

I've already started the next chapter. It will be another two weeks I think. I just got let go from my job, so the muse has sort of been a little down. But, I promise that more is coming.

The question of who Mary's father is will come up later. Legally, I am not sure if it would matter unless he was married to her mother. Then she would be a legitimate heir. But at this point in the story, everyone, including Mary, believes that Lord F is only her adopted father.

I always thought the 95 Colonel F was a little on the fugly side :-P I picture Toby Stephens as Colonel Fitzwilliam:

good for richard!

and the viscount and his family are such haughty narrow-minded people people its hard to believe that richard is related to them.

Sorry I was thinking about another story, but I have emailed all my female friends the link to this story in hopes to increase the readers for Pride& Prejudice, so this it can be in the top ten as well, because in my humble opinion it should be.

I thought your story made the top ten, but know that you said that I know it was another author.  :-( ,but I think this story should be right up there too and to prove it I will reccomend this story to a few people!

Your response is correct, I didn't consider that Georgie has had feelings for Richard and I do remember Mary basically saying it was an impossibility for her to marry Richard because of her parentage.  That sheds a lot of light on the situation.  I am now wondering how Mary & Georgiana will take to Richard being an escort to the Viscountess(?) and the Lady.

Author's Response: Oh, and what top ten did I make?

for that period of time that was a very scandalous make out session between a gentleman and a lady. and i do believe georgina might have fancied her cousin. i recall reading an excerpt where she mentioned richard as a potential suitor although he thinks of her as a younger sister. either that or she is just jealous since the entire time richard resided at pemberly he spent most of his focus upon mary and georgina felt left out.

i love period pieces and just recently starting rereading my austen collection.

when you are done with this story you should consider getting the rights to do a continuation piece!  i think austen fans will be delighted with this gem as well.

looking forward to more updates!!! great job!!

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the kind words! Once it is complete, I plan to do a rewrite and try to get it published. I know Pride and Prejudice spin offs are popular, but I haven't seen any cross cultural novels on the market. I also thought about taking out all of the Pride and Prejudice references, as the story works quite well without them, but then I wonder if that would just hurt its future marketability. Mary is an original character, as is Col Fitzwiliiam, for the most part. His character is mentioned so briefly in Pride and Prejudice that I pretty much got to create him from scratch.

Jovanfanever,

Sorry, I deleted your question by mistake. I picture Freema Agyeman of Doctor Who and Law and Order UK playing Mary. I was trying to find pictures of dark skinned black women in Regency garb, but such pictures are hard to come by. Freema played Tattycoram in Little Dorrit. I imagined Mary as taller than Freema. I don't like to write petite heroines, maybe because I am not petite :-P So, if Col. Fitzwilliam is 6'2, Mary is 5'8. So, in the picture below, put Freema in platform shoes and give her a bit of a tan, and you'd have a good visual of Mary :)

Title: Prologue

Reading Lord Farthington letter made me go through so many different emotions; admiratio, anger, and disgust to name a few. I admired that he took this child and raised her as his own. But I couldn't help but feel anger and disgusted at the fact that race was such a negative factor back in those days.

I really have no idea how I would have survived back then, but I'm happy I was born in 1982, instead of 1882 or even 1942.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review. I completely understand. As much as I love the Regency period and squeal over period movies and attire, I am very glad to be a black woman today than to have been born a black woman or even as a white woman back then.

Title: Prologue

Though I’ve never read the novel, I loved the film Pride and Prejudice (2005); Mr. Darcy - wonderfully played by Matthew MacFadyen - is my favorite character.  I’m spellbound by the vernacular, the mannerisms and customs of the period.

Your adaptation is most interesting, even in its infancy.  I’m looking forward to reading how Mr. Darcy and Miss Mary verbally spar with one another, how they match wit in regard to societal status quo, relationships, and love.

Ooo I’m giddy with anticipation! Update soon.

Author's Response: Well, I am not sure how much matching of wits will go on. I've written Mary to be a very gentle and shy character. I imagine her as someone who was doted on by her father and largely sheltered from the world by him. I imagine that this being sheltered is one of her faults. Lord Farthington raised her in this sort of happy bubble, even keeping her somewhat removed from his life's work.  As the story progresses, you'll learn more about New Sussex, Mary's father and her character. I almost fear that I have made Mary too gentle and kind, but she will be shown to have a strength of her own in later chapters that is borne out of hardship.

Great prologue...I love Regency romances too...love the time period where gentlemen and ladies were the rule rather than the exception...

Seems Lord Farthington was a generous father to Mary Caroline...she seems a woman of high pedigree...like her father said...her life should be one of a lady but alas...the color of her skin makes her standing in those times...precarious and uncertain...this is a very interesting set up to this story and I look forward to reading more...you've captured the language of the period perfectly...I think I will enjoy reading this story...thanks for sharing...
