Just completed this read, and loved it.
I've not watched Firefly in a while, but I thought you captured the essence of the characters quite well. I know others were disappointed with who Mal chose, but it made sense. Zoe had her chance of loving Wash, and Mal should have his chance of loving Inara. Doesn't mean they (Zoe and Mal) won't end up together. As Wash's death proves, nothing is guaranteed (not that I want to see Inara die). Just that they need the opportunity to work through it - Inara admitted that she's not exactly who they think, which could pose a problem for the couple long-term.
Also, when you go through the stuff Zoe and Mal have gone through together, that kind of love doesn't just die. Lie dormant, perhaps, but I feel they'll make their way back to each other. Great job!

That was good! I won't lie, I wanted Mal to choose Zoe but you weaved a great tale. I still get a little lost in the 'verse. I'll probably re-read this again because I know there were some things I missed the first time.

I know, I know. I will have to get a kick me sign to wear because of this. Well, the portrayers of both characters are Latinas, so...hahahaha. Seriously, I set out to do Mal/Zoe, but they wouldn't let me in this story.
Also, I'm sure if you were getting lost in the 'verse I might have been the reason. if you read it again let me know of any rough patches that threw you off. I'm an old dog, but always willing to learn.

I noticed that he still held Zoe's hand. I was a little disappointed that he chose Inara, but that's life. I enjoyed reading this story.
Author's Response: I'm getting a lot of that. You know, I was disappointed too. I was thinking I would set out to write a Zoe/Mal fic and Inara butted in right away, I was really surprised, but got over it and wrote what you see. I might have to do another story along those lines, though. Thank you for reading.

as much as i loved wash and zoe, i always thought her and mal were made for each other. although mal is attracted to inara i thought that he loved zoe much deeper and more passionately jmho.
liked it very much would have loved it, if mal realized that what he loved was staring him in his face the entire time.
Author's Response: I hear you, and I thought about that as well. I felt this is where the characters wanted to go in this story -- obviously a contrived story because it's a challenge fic. Still, even as I wrote the end i thought Inara/Mal once tested might not prove to be what was promised. So...much tension, so many possibilities. Thank you so much for reading. Ahh! How have I missed this? LOL. I love it! Just beautiful. Zoe's pregnant. I love it, I love it, I love it. And I love how Mal knocked the beejesus out of Jayne; that was funny. Great update. Onto the next.
Author's Response: Thanks! I was inspired by Heart of Gold to throw the pregnancy in and i figured Serenity had such a tight timeline that there could have been some nookie before all hell broke loose. Thanks for taking the time to dig my story up and finish it.

Zoe's heart had been opened and broken by Mal's confession, Wash's love and audacity, the weight of her own grief and in the very background a vibrating thread she knew had something to do with Mal and Inara's longing. She framed his face with her hands, acting on impulse, and kissed him full on the mouth. She felt his startled reaction and held him to her as he seemed to war with himself, then surrender to her. She inclined her head and parted her lips, encouraging him to do the same by offering her tongue to him. The kiss was electric, full of possibility, remorse and solace. There was the deep friendship pushed aside by something that would have been passion in another time. There was grief, that wondered what she was doing following this path when her husband was still circling around her from some unknown where and likely kicking himself for putting this all into Mal's head. There was the admission that she had been fully set on getting herself killed one way or another, a cowards path she knew now she would not tread. Not after the guts it took this man, her brother and friend, to drag out such complicated love and lay it at her feet.
Your flow is beautiful. I LOVE this passage. And must confess to you that I cried. Okay, I got teary-eyed. LOL. Seriously. This was just beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you. ;)

Awwww...Madame Z, thank you so much. I also like this paragraph and particularly the notion of having Mal drag out complicated love and lay it at Zoe's feet, like something heavy, tangible, intricate and yet ephemeral -- something that maybe should not have seen the light of day. But heck, Wash shouldn't have died...

I have always loved the idea of these two together, though I must admit that I do love me some Wash.
This story is very engrossing. Well written and paced, I found myself thoroughly drawn in. I can't wait for the next chapter.

Author's Response: Yeah, with browncoats (the fans of firefly) it's all about the language. It so sick, i have the ladies using words like shiny (for something that's good or cool) and meimei (little sister, sister). I thought I was a geek with my star trek love but nothing compares to this. There is a whole chinise pinyinary dedicated to Firefly/Serenity Mandarin slang and whole wikis that show the ship, the planets, the episodes. who boy! and thanks for reading and dealing with the lingo.

Oh, I love this Geri. It is so good. I always wanted them to explore Zoe and Mal's history more (with flashbacks). You are giving me some of that now with this fic.

Beautifully haunting were the scenes of Zoe in her room. Those are the only words that come to mind. I look forward to reading more insight spinner.

Mal saw her relief and swallowed hard; here's where it gets tricky, Mal thought, "'Nara, you ain't all wrong. Zoe n' me...I never seen her as a woman until Wash came on crew. Oh yeah I mean I know she's a stunner and she'd had men 'fore that, sure. Same as me, but all that pretty much was 'fore the war got done. Since then we've had each other's back; what we lived through, what was done to us left little room for anyone else or each other. Wash came in and messed that around. Wash made me look at Zoe as a woman. I felt the fool, havin' looked past her all this time. And selfish, too. Coulda been somethin' there. So when they said they was gettin' married I...."
Wonderful! You know all these thoughts ring true; the character I'm sure went through these emotions when Zoe informed him she and Wash would marry. And there's an episode where both Zoe and Mal 'play' Wash, that I thought was cute and revealing, but at the same time didn't 'really' get into how Mal really felt. It was left up to the audience to assume. But this is perfect. You capture the language so well. I love this! And I look forward to more ;)

This is my first Firefly fanfic, but I judged the Strawberries before and I really wanted to take a peek into Mal/Zoe.
