Summary:

Emery Harris has her hands full running the Beckenbach family for the past 7 years and she's loved every minute of it. So throwing the surprise 35th anniversary party for her employers is hardly a chore. But rather than worrying about the guests and the band, Emery finds herself fretting about the arrival of the prodical son. For the first time in 3 years Nick Beckenbach will be stateside. As much as Em has tried to convince herself that she's moved past her feelings for him, she can't be sure until this weekend is over. But there is more than just her feelings for Nick to contend with. One thing is for sure, the party won't be the only surprise this weekend.

Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4

Is Emery really this dim...does she not realize what is happening right before her very eyes...Bas is so over the moon for her...he's definitely thinks of her as more than just a 'friend'...and I bet he is just as frustrated as I am that Em can't see see the forest for the trees because she thinks she's so hung up on his brother...I'm getting 'friends' vibes between Nick and Em...he cares for her...appreciates her inner warmth and beauty...but as a dear friend...almost like family...but he only has eyes for Cady...he is definitely in love with this one...

How long is it going to take Em to see the light...I hope not too long...though I do enjoy stories of unrequited love...I do need payoff...Sebastian is the man for Emery...fingers crossed that she realizes this sooner rather than later...

Great update...looking forward to more...great job thusfar...

Sorry that you're sick...I know all about allergies...and sinuses...ugh...poor baby...hope you feel better soon and thanks so much for sharing more of this tale with us...

Em..she makes me want to go argggh....she seems so perceptive of everything else  except what's right in front of her...did she never take the time to wonder why her "best friend" Bas has never been really serious about a woman in all the years she known him...why he spends so much time hanging out with her...why he's having these huge emotional mood swings around her...and they intensify whenever Nick comes into the picture...hello, girlfriend, the man is head-over-heels in love with you...and she is liking Cady in spite of her feelings for Nick...hopefully she'll see that whatever she feels for Nick in merely infatuation...and the love of a lifetime in right there in front of her face with Sebastian...can't wait for more...

Well...who'd have thunk it would be Nick to finally get Em to see the light...the question is...what will she do about this new 'enlightenment'...something tells me that Em has some serious soul-searching to do...can she see Bas in this new light...can she return his feelings...was she subconsciously using her 'feelings' for Nick to mask what she was feeling for Bas all along...some many questions...and I can't wait to see what Em does next...I know what I want...but I guess I'll have to wait patiently to see what happens next...lol...love this story...hope another update is coming soon...

Title: Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - the intro

Okay...I don't know what to think about Maya and Caleb's obviously shared past...did he rape her or something while in his drug-alcohol induced state...is he the father of her Dylan...why would she/he react that way...ye goodness...if this is true...this is going to be one hell of a journey...hope Maya and the baby are okay...but I feel the drama has just started...

Hurry on back with more...I need more...great beginning...

Title: Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - prologue cont'd

No need to apologize, Kelly...at least for this reader...I think if it was overly offensive to me...I would have stopped reading and kept my comments to myself...

Now...this is a very tough story to absorb...I want to have empathy for Caleb...I really do...but...when I think about the hell he must have put Maya through...because of his poor choices...following Reed around and letting him goad him into behavior he intrinsically knew was wrong...drinking anything that Reed gave him...and being such a coward and not turning himself in after the fact when his head was once again on straight...I just can't...I don't know if I'll ever be able to root for this character...but this is such an interesting story...I cannot turn away...I want to see where you take this and how Maya and Caleb can come back from this ugly place they now find themselves in...

What I can say is...I know Maya is a strong and special person...not only to survive the violation of her body...but to CHOOSE to not hold it against HER child...and bring him into the world in spite of how he was conceived...this takes extreme courage to do...I do want her to find her sunshine again...not sure if I want that to be with Caleb...because I just can't get passed what he did to her...but who knows...maybe I'll change my mind about him as the story progresses...no, I don't think he's a totally evil person...but he committed one of the most heinous, vile acts a man can commit on a woman...maybe Dylan will be his redemption...but I don't see Maya wanting him anywhere near her baby and I can't say I blame her...

I loved both Ernest and Nina's reactions...Ernest to revelation that his son had violated a woman and impregnated...and Nina's protection of her friend...this should prove to be an interesting read if nothing else...so please continue...I'd like to see where you take this story...

Title: Chapter 9: Chapter 9 - Where do broken hearts go?

Jensen is a very weak "man"...and though she probably doesn't realize it now...Maya has had a very fortunate escape...any man who gives into the needs of his flesh over a cheap piece of arse...especially if said arse belongs to his fiancee's sister's is lower than a snake's belly...I don't have any sympathy for him or his weak apologies...funny, his guilty conscience didn't come into play when he was banging Jasmine's brains out six ways to Sunday...yep, weak is the apropro term for him...and Maya would be a fool to ever trust someone like him with her heart and future again...I know it's painful now...but I hope she has the sense to choose herself...she's worth more than that...

Now as for Miss Jasmine...is this trick for real...she basically takes a sledgehammer to her sister's life and sees it some kind of sick "joke"...she's an evil, vindictive evil bitch...yeah, I said it...does she serously think that violating her sister's trust is about some man...what about that "sister code" that we as women should live by...the one person in your life that loves you unconditionally no matter how twisted and rotten to the core you are...and you repay her love like this...are you kidding me, Jasmine...I'm so glad that Maya grew a backbone and stopped viewing this witch through rose-tinted glasses...Jasmine is a cancer in her life that needs to be exorcised...I jumped for joy when she threw that cheap trick out of her rear...sometimes family is your own worst enemy...good riddance to bad rubbish...

Love this story and the exploration of these characters...you've crafted quite an engrossing tale...can't wait for more...

Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4-Maya

Wow...it's rare that a glimpse of a character's background leaves me with more questions than answers...I gather that Maya has had a very difficult life from all accounts but refuses to let her circumstance hinder her from making a better life for herself...and IMHO, Jasmine is an awful person...can't find one redeeming quality about her...her selfishness is appalling...yet in a strange way...I truly believe she loves her sister as much as she loves taunting her...also think she has Jensen's number...just don't like the way she's going about exposing him...and speaking of Jensen...what happened to him...did he leave Maya when he found out about her pregnancy...did she tell him about the rape...did he blame her for 'getting herself in trouble'...I got the distinct impression from the prologue that it was just Maya and Baby Dylan against the world with her only support coming from her friend, Nina...I also believe it was Jasmine's selfishness that perhaps led to the predicament Maya now finds herself in...she was supposed to be the paid "date" for those three horny losers and somehow poor Maya got caught up in that and paid the price...very interesting indeed...off to read Caleb's backstory...hopefully it will give me more insight into what kind of person he truly is because right now I'm on the fence with him...I need a reason to root for his character...Maya...not so much...she has a good, loving trusting heart that others seem to take delight in stomping on...

Title: Chapter 5: Chapter 5-Caleb

Arghhh...I lost my second review...I had to really think before I could leave a review...you got me really thinking...and girl, that's a good thing...

So Caleb idolizes his older brother, Reed...I guess he (Reed) at one time would be someone to emulate especially for his younger impressionable little brother...but Reed's path has led to nothing but trouble for Caleb...the biggest thing I get is that there is something seriously wrong in this family...none have them have properly dealt with or grieved their mother's/wife's suicide...a very traumatic experience that has the tendency to tear family's apart...and that's exactly what it did to this family...all of them have chosen avoidance as a coping mechanism...Ernest by becoming distant from his sons and not being an active participant in his son's lives...and Reed...I could write a book on him...not only did he lead his little brother astray...he's slowly destroying Casey (I'm assuming is his true love but I hesitate to call her that because IMHO Reed doesn't love Reed so how can he truly love another healthily when he can't/won't deal with himself) and hurting his daughter, Reece...I truly believe once one becomes a parent it is a given that you try to be the best person you can be if not for yourself...then for your child...he hasn't done that...and his defeatist attitude is truly maddening....glad Casey had the sense to remove herself and their daughter from his destructiveness before it affected Reece more adversely than it already has...and Caleb...with what he did to Maya...I know she wasn't someone he proported to love...just a stranger...a cheap 'piece of arse'...but he couldn't even treat her with common human decency...he chose to violate her body to 'save' her from a fate 'worse' than rape...are you kidding me...and in the process he has unwittingly brought another innocent life into the mix...what a mess...it will be truly fascinating how you navigate the twists and turns in this tale...but I know I can't wait to read about it...and thanks so much for the updates...much appreciated!!!

Title: Chapter 7: Chapter 7-My Loves, my loss

I knew it...and I called it right...Jasmine is a skank of the highest order and Jensen...there are just no words...loved the air of mystery building up to the climax (no pun intended)...kinda of figured it out almost halfway through Chapter 7...secrets abound...wonder who tells Maya first...I take what I said back about Jasmine loving her sister in her own way...because with sisters like her....well, you know the rest...

So Caleb has a hidden talent...the woodworking came as a surprise...sad really that his hard fought for sobriety didn't last long and will have lasting reprecussions...this is getting very good...can't wait to read the next update...enjoying this story so much...

Sorry...can't do it.  Christina and Nick make me ill.  I know this is your vision of their reality for this story but there is no way in H-E-double hockey sticks that Tom would ever have such a relationship with Camille.  Ack, that's all kinds of wrong!!!  Tom is truly a good person who made the unfortunate mistake of loving a faithless woman.  Run, Tom, run...don't walk to the nearest exit...you deserve so much better.

I mean this in the deepest sincerity because I would never criticize someone else's baby (their work)...but trashing Tom will not take away the stain burned on my mind of seeing Christina hump ole Nick on a cooler in his Mami's backyard...so I'll leave this story alone...

I just had to chime in here...you nailed this chapter...I see now why Val doesn't visit her grandmother...why are some black people so colorstruck...she's a depicable old woman and I'm so glad that Matheson put her in her place...but also love the support he gave Val to realize that her problem went much deeper because she lost her son and Val was a constant reminder of how she lost him to Rachel...loved it!!!

Title: Chapter 43: Chapter 43 A Taste of Insanity and Obsession

Hello, Brenda, I finally had the chance to catch back up, been busy back at work and in meetings all week..so don't have much time to read let alone review...

Anywho...Val's grandmother, Ethel, is C-R-A-Z-Y and E-V-I-L...so glad that Val confronted that old harpy and let her know that her plan to separate the cousins didn't work at all...she's a miserable old wench who wants everyone else to be as miserable as she is...I find it hard that ANY man would have found anything beyond her "looks" likeable enough to marry her...petty, mean-spirited, and plain old vindictive is what she is...and then having the nerve to haul off and smack Val for telling her the truth about herself...Val should have slapped the taste out of her twisted mouth...but I suppose I'll have to be content with the verbal smackdown she gave the old biddy...how evil do you have to be to treat your own grandchildren the way she treated both Val and Tameka...she reminds me of Mister in The Color Purple who deliberately tried to keep Celie and Nettie apart because he knew they were the only ones who loved each other...I hope she lives the rest of her pathetic existence alone with a houseful of cats...

Glad Val has finally found the strength through Matheson's love to wash her hand of the sick woman and now is forging a new relationship with her cousin...for a long time I was angry at Tameka too...but she's just a scared little girl who's felt unloved her whole life who was also mentally abused by ther grandmother...shame on the grownups in her life...at least Val had Mavis...Meka had no one...my heart breaks for her despite what she did to her cousin...and she paid heavily for it...

Now the latest update with Matheson's confrontation with Gramps...way to go, Matheson, way to go...the old wrinkled fart had it coming to him in spades...loved how Matheson proved to him that he's not only a Hendriks...but he has Matheson blood running through his veins...didn't know Matheson is as 'touched' as his dear mama Emily...bet the old coot nearly wet his Depends as Matheson pressed that knife to his throat...but you don't mess with a man's heart the way Gramps has been messing with Matheson's love, Val, loved how Matheson already thinks and refers to Val as being his wife...she is his as much as he is hers...and nothing and no one can come between a love like that...let's see if Gramps is really quick on the uptake or if he still has some dirty trick up his sleeve...but beware...Matheson don't play that!!! LOL!!!

Love this story...more, more, more!!!!

Author's Response:

Thanks so much for the wonderful review.  Yes, I'm still trying to figure out what's going to happen to Ethel, that old hag.  Matheson is not as crazy as his mother, his grandfather kinda drove him to that point.  Sometimes people can be pushed only so much!  I've enjoyed writing this story for more than a year.  I can't believe I've let it drag on this long.  It will be ending soon after the wedding, but I won't stop writing.  I'll have to give Mat and Val a break.  Most likely I will pick it up again later.

Title: Chapter 40: Chapter 40 Facing the Truth

Wow, Brenda, you've spun quite an intricate tale of the joining together of many families...I love how you've told such a story of how we are sum total of our experiences...I love that you're not introducing characters for drama's sake...but each of the characters have personalities and take this story in so many interesting directions...I feel so spoiled...now it's going to be a killer trying to wait each week for a new update when I was so used to getting them on the regular...but I know life beckons...but I really like to thank you for bringing your story here to The Chamber and I got the pleasure of reading it thusfar...

When I first started reading this I'd thought I'd feel uncomfortable reading the various stereotypes and biases we all possess but you know what...that's what makes this story so realistic...they are coming from an honest place inside of us all...I feel the characters' pains and preconceived notions of all of our differences and I love that you're giving them a chance to work through those issues in a realistic yet entertaining pace...I could go on at great length about each of the characters but I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you how very grateful and inspired I am at this wonderful work of art...thanks again...look forward to future updates...

Author's Response:

Thank you.  Your review means a lot to me.  I don't know why my mind goes in so many directions (Like a soap opera) but it does.  I've had some readers criticize me for that, but I can't help it.  LOL.  I write mainly for stress relief and I was shocked at the response I got here on the Chamber.  I am glad that people like my work and I welcome all reviews good and bad because they help me to grow.  We all have to work through our prejudices and the first step is admitting that we have them, then we can move forward.  Writing interracial stories brings it all to the forefront and we can recognize and laugh at ourselves and grow if we allow ourselves to grow that is.  Thanks again.  I've written chapter 41, but today is my beta's birthday so I don't want to rush her.  Hopefully I will have it out by this weekend!

Title: Chapter 21: Everybody loves a Wedding

Thank you for the rapid-fire update to this story...very much appreciated...

So Deidra is trying...she's at least considering the possibility of giving Scott a child...but maybe a lot of people won't agree with me...but I actually understand where Deidra is coming from...I decided long ago that I will never be a mother and no amount of talking and compromise will ever change my mind...I'm a emotionally selfish person...I realize that...I'm honest with any of my potential mates about this...it is on them if they choose to deal with the situation...and in my profession (I'm a teacher BTW) I've seen what true neglect of a child is...why bring a child into this world if you are not going to be financially, emotionally, and psychologically ready to give him/her your all...some women are just not maternal...I'm one of them...and I suspect Deidra is the same...does that make us any less of a woman...heck no...we just have a different outlook on life...Scott knows Deidra's feelings on this issue...it's not like she blind-sided him with it...yet he CHOSE to continue a relationship with her with the hopes of changing her mind one day...not that there's anything wrong with that...but if she does decide later on that she can't go through with the parenting thing...where does that leave them...he went into this with his eyes wide open...and though while I do believe compromise is a good thing...but on some issues...especially something extrinsically fundamental as this...making decisions based on someone else's feelings, wants, and desires while ignoring your own could lead to resentment down the road...just my take....

Looking forward to more...

Title: Chapter 9: Date One

This is such a beautiful story...sorry I haven't reviewed until now...but I work so hard during the week...that is almost a virtual impossibility for me now...thanks for telling this lovestory via flashbacks...love both Deidre and Scott...Deidre is slowly seeing the "real" Scott and not the so-called "manwhore" he presents to the world...I love how Scott is slowly revealing layers of himself because he realizes Deidre is a different sort of woman...she became his friend first and foremost...so she deserves special treatment...that in itself says alot about the level of respect he has for her...she's simply not the charm 'em, bed 'em kind...but slowly she is becoming the love of his life...again, thanks for giving me a chance to fall in love with them as they fall for each other...

Chase...I can't figure out...he as Scott's friend I believe would not think so lowly and dismissive of him if he truly was...I can understand healthy competition and professional ambition...but to badmouth a friend behind his back is too much and says a lot about their "friendship"...I see how a rift would develop between these two former friends...

Again...thank for sharing...lovely story indeed...and since I've never watched Grey's Anatomy...it's all new for me...

Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Loved this, Brenda!!!

Good for Henny...she didn't allow Henry's wrong to change what's in her heart and therefore, let vengeance and hatred rule her life...and despite everything...she had/has a good life...a life Henry and his parents deemed she shouldn't be allowed to have...but her mother ensured that she had...I feel so sorry for Vanessa...and sorry, but I can't muster up one smidgeon sympathy for Henry at all...and I doubt that he "loved" anyone but himself...he's a weak, selfish tool...but as with all things in life...you live and you learn...the good with the bad...

Great short, and Merry Christmas!!!

Author's Response:

Henry now realizes the consequences of his bad decision.  He has all the wealth that he was afraid to lose, but he's never going to be happy.  I have a feeling that even the restoration of his health will not keep him from thinking about his bad choice.

Author's Response:

Henry was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.  How many 19 year olds would have chosen differently?  I don't know.  But his life will never be the same.

Title: Chapter 1: Chapter 1 Henry's Quest

I don't know if it is your intention or not...but the character of Henry still leaves me cold...he is a very weak-minded and selfish individual...I know we all make mistakes in our youth...but what he did to Vanessa and then by extension was so incredibly unjust...I can't at this time root for him...they say that having a life-threatening illness changes a person...and by Henny giving him a second chance at life...he is out to rectify the past...what you've described of Henry's personality goes beyond just a youthful mistake...but is more like a huge character flaw at his core...

I would have thought that breaking through Vanessa's barriers would have been more difficult than Henny's...she is the one who faced direct rejection and she was the one who was left pregnant, alone, and heart-broken by Henry's cowardice...but there she is...accepting this man back not only in her bed...but back into her fragile heart....I understand more clearly Henny's resentment...it makes sense to me...if left up to this weak man and his parents...she might not even exist now...this is a very interesting story indeed...so glad you gifted us with another intriguing chapter in their saga...

Thank you again...I look forward to where you take this story...and I didn't overlook that no mention of protection was msde in Henry's and Vanessa's more recent encounter...wonder what Henny will make of that and what will the result of her parents' carelessness...excellent writing as always...

Author's Response:

Thank you for your in depth review.  Yes, Henry is weak, but he's working on it.  All men are not Alpha and strong.  Henry's flaw is that he was born sickly with a silver spoon in his mouth, being waited on hand and foot.  Of course by the time he had to make an adult decision at 19 never having to have to live in the real world, he did what was easy.

The good part is that Henry had a conscious.  He knew he was wrong and was filled with self loathing.  He deliberately married a lesbian because he didn't feel that he deserved to be loved again.  He wouldn't date because he felt that he wasn't worthy to be loved after what he did to Vanessa.  He went aimlessly through life, just existing.  He was rich in money, but poor in health and spirit...until Henrietta.

When he realized that his daughter was his salvation, he felt that God was giving him a second chance to get things right.  When he went to Vanessa, he didn't go with the intent to seduce her and she certainly didn't expect to end up in bed with him.  But the vow they had made to God never left their subconscious minds and when they kissed, all their pent up emotions came pouring out.

Now they are at a crossroads in their relationship.  Henry has not won her back, and Vanessa will back  off from Henry because of her daughter.  It will be an interesting journey.

Henry has to go through some things to become a stronger man.  He will have to fight for what he wants which is something money can't buy.

You don't have to be on his side, but know that with his second chance, he would give his very life before he hurts either of the two women again.
