OK...so I'm new to this story and just spent the last couple of hours reading the entire thing. It's different, but I kinda like the fact that you jumped in two years after they are an established, engaged couple. However, that also brings with it its own set of issues as well. Being that backstory that's helpful at times to help over the rough patches when the character(s) is being difficult. Its the only thing I can come up with to explain why these two are/were even together.
Ellie: She confused me some. It obviously takes a strong personality to deal with a moody, introverted, quiet, undemonstrative person like Nick. She showed she could be that woman when fighting with him. She never backed down. Thats why I was surprised at her behavior with his family. Even though Nick totally ambushed her, I expected Ellie to show some true grit with them. Especially his mother; given the reason being was that she was black and Marta thought that that wasn't good enough. Also, in turn, with Bianca, and her nasty ass attitude. Instead, she is in the bathroom hiding and crying. Again, I know she was ambushed, but never let them see you cry. Save that for later. I was just wondering why she wasn't more mad about them not liking her because of her color, rather than sad by it, given she was already primed by Nick's last minute confession in the car. I was thinking good, that anger will help her through the dinner if she's already pissed about it.
Also, later on, the issue of Marta bringing her to Nick's aid. It kind of annoyed me that Ellie kept acting as if she had absolutely no control over anything Marta was doing. And that Marta treated her so high-handedly. Marta only cared about Nick's well-being, and if tolerating Ellie was what she had to do, then so be it. I was offended for Ellie! It was like Ellie still wasn't good enough, but she would hold her nose and keep it moving. Nevermind what Ellie might have had going on in her life since seeing Nick. Then Bianca calling her a bitch and brushing up against her like that. That warranted her saying something to the little snot! Not act all scared by it. She was invited! What she expected Juliette to do in all of that is still a mystery to me.
Then, that whole blow-up at Nick's house. It wasn't like she was there on vacation, which is how she kind of came off. She came to say her peace, hear his, and get the hell on up out of there. Because, really, nothing had changed. Now, she's pregnant, Nick is told and shows up and suddenly he's over the moon about a baby? Since when? A year before he was saying anything but that. If him being married to Juliette and finding Ellie being pregnant doesn't mess up his plans, I don't know what would. His reaction doesn't add up. I don't know how I feel about Ellie's reaction either. And Lord only knows what kind of mess will come out of Marta's mouth about this. Probably something like how Ellie planned this and how she finally got her son back, with the "proper" type of wife so don't mess it up crap.
Oh, her family's reaction surprised me. Its almost like, except for Delia, she completely on her own with them. I had the impression they were alot closer than that.
You've got some interesting characters here. They all completely do the opposite of what you would think. I can't wait to see what happens next. Welcome to the family, indeed.
