Wow i don't know what to say but I think Benjamin needs to talked to her to get the answer he needs. Why wasn't his father thrown in jail?

OMG!  This is extraordinary!  Racism in the states is based on skin color.  Conclusions about whatever can only be made when you open up the box and learn about who you are.  Ethnicity has little to do w/skin color.  Toi Derricotte is a professor and sister who has written poetry and essays on this issue. Notably her collection titled "The Black Notebook" has a glossy white cover and the title is embossed on the paper.  It doesn't appear in ink.  She's a sister who looks white and was forced to pass as a child by her grandmother during her soujourns thru "white people only" dept stores.  

Anyway I can't wait until the next chapter and see how he faces his fears and assumptions.  & yes people still pass today.

My most fave episode of Law & Order details the case of a "white" man whose white wife (2nd marriage) gives birth to a black baby girl.  The white wife from his 1st marriage kills white wife #2 b/c her decision to keep the black baby will out the real race of the 2 firstborn kids to their private school friends.  It also comes out that wife #1 was so racist that he (dad) had to pay her to prevent her abandoning her ownkids.

So glad that I stopped to read chapter one.

I love it and honestly I am neither surprised nor offended by his reaction to his real mother.I think he's hurt and maybe ashamed about the circumstances of his conception and not so mmuch the fact that his mother is black. Brenda, you tell your stories so well and I'm here for the long haul.

You always bring it, and this is no exception.  Truthfully,  I thought the mother could end up being black because of her name. The only problem I had with his reaction was him saying he wasn't racist, but his was uncomfortable around blacks...it sounds like latent racism to me. I guess he will get a chance to work on that now. Update immediately or sooner. I have so many question already that I know you will answer later....Will this be a story about Mom and son? Will he get a romance with a non-black woman?  Does his bio father own Milner's Department store? So many question...
